Buckingham Palace announced Tuesday that King Charles III will be crowned on May 6. According to palace officials, the coronation of both Charles and Camilla, the Queen Consort, will be a solemn religious ceremony conducted by Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, at the historic Westminster Abbey.

“The coronation will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in long standing traditions and pageantry,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

The coronation will last an hour and is expected to be a “no frills” affair lacking the traditional pomp and circumstance of traditional coronations.  It is to be a modern coronation with “a wink and a nod” to the past and the embrace of the future role of the monarchy.  Yet, those steeped in tradition will not be disappointed with the sacred ceremony in which Charles will be anointed with holy oil before being crowned and accepting the orb, scepter, and coronation ring.
